Stress Relief and Some Great Herbal Remedies for Stress

We all have stress sometimes. For some people, it happens before having to speak in public. For other people, it might be before a first date.

What causes stress for you may not be stressful for someone else.

Sometimes stress is helpful – it can encourage you to meet a deadline or get things done.

But long-term stress can increase the risk of diseases like depression, heart disease and a variety of other problems.

A stress-related illness called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops after an event like war, physical or sexual assault, or a natural disaster.

The word `stress` is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as "a state of affair involving demand on physical or mental energy".

A condition or circumstance (not always adverse), which can disturb the normal physiological and psychological functioning of an individual.

In medical parlance `stress` is defined as a perturbation of the body`s homeostasis.

This demand on mind-body occurs when it tries to cope with incessant changes in life. A `stress` condition seems `relative` in nature.

Extreme stress conditions, psychologists say, are detrimental to human health but in moderation stress is normal and, in many cases, proves useful.

Causes of Stress

1. Death: of spouse, family, friend
2. Health: injury, illness, pregnancy
3. Crime: Sexual molestation, mugging, burglary, pick-pocketed
4. Self-abuse: drug abuse, alcoholism, self-harm
5. Family change: separation, divorce, new baby, marriage
6. Sexual problems: getting partner, with partner
7. Argument: with spouse, family, friends, co-workers, boss
8. Physical changes: lack of sleep, new work hours
9. New location: vacation, moving house
10. Money: lack of it, owing it, investing it

Symptoms of Stress

1. Muscle tension
2. Low back pain
3. Pains in shoulders or neck
4. Pains in chest
5. Stomach/abdominal pain
6. Muscle spasms or nervous tics
7. Unexplained rashes or skin irritations
8. 'Pounding' or 'racing' heart
9. Sweaty palms

Treatment of Stress

When you normally think of acupuncture, you think of a person sitting with several needles inserted into their skin, into parts of the body like the ear, the arm, or the wrist.

This is a good picture of a patient that is having an acupuncture treatment.

If you know someone that is dealing with a lot of stress, you may want to help him or her deal with it.

You can do some things in order to get them through their difficult periods and continue to see them through the entire dilemma that stress can bring to someone’s life.

Home Remedies for Stress


Yogurt is the best home remedy for stress. It is rich in vitamin A, B complex and vitamin D. It provides relief from insomnia, migraine and cramps associated with menstruation. It is a best diet for stress.

Make a tea by pouring a cup of boiling water over one teaspoon of dried sage leaves. Strain and sweetened, with honey, if required. This is also good natural remedy for stress.

Blackstrap molasses are another effective food remedy. It is a by-product of the sugar refining process and is rich in iron and B vitamins.

Alfalfa and sunflower seeds are also effective in the stress treatment.

Sprouts are also effective diet for stress as they are rich in calcium.

The leaves of holy basil known as tulsi are highly beneficial in the stress treatment.

Chew 12 leaves of basil twice a day morning and evening for preventing stress. Tulsi is known as adaptogen or antistress agents.
